The band was originally formed in 1981 by lead singer and guitarist Johnnie Dee from Niagara Falls, ON. Following the departure of his original lead guitarist, Johnnie met Derry Grehan, also from the Niagara Falls area, and he ended up joining the band. Johnnie and Derry immediately decided to re-build the band at that point, and recruited Dave Betts on drums, Ray Coburn on keyboards, and Gary Lalonde on bass. They hit the road hard, playing 6 nights a week, and writing songs with the hope of getting a record deal. In 1983, the band entered a demo of “New Girl Now” to a Homegrown Contest put on by Toronto rock station Q107. They won that year and this led to a multi album, world wide deal with WEA Canada after being signed by A&R president Bob Roper. The band recorded their debut self-titled album which was released in July, 1984. The album was an instant success, and with the help of massive airplay, several video’s on MTV and MuchMusic, it went on to sell over 300,000 copies in Canada alone. Since their debut album, Honeymoon Suite has released a total of 9 studio albums to date, with well over 1 million units sold worldwide. They’ve enjoyed an incredible run of success driven by a string of hit singes such as “New Girl Now”, “Burning In Love”, “Stay In the Light”, “Wave Babies”, “Feel It Again” and “What Does It Take”, to name a few. The band has won numerous awards including a Canadian Juno for “Group of the Year” in1986, triple platinum sales in Canada on the first 3 albums, and platinum sales for the Greatest Hits cd “The Singles”, released in 1989. In Oct. of 1986, they travelled to Tokyo, Japan to perform at the legendary Budokan for the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival, taking home the “Audience 1st Choice Award” and the “Golden Award” for their song “Those Were the Days”. They also received an award in June of 2015 for “100,000 + Performances” on Canadian radio for “Burning In Love”, “New Girl Now”, “Wave Babies”, and “What Does It Take”. They have toured extensively in the US, Canada and Europe with acts such as Heart, ZZ Top, Journey, Billy Idol, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, 38 Special, Jethro Tull and Saga, to name a few. Honeymoon Suite has also enjoyed having many of their songs placed in film and TV shows such as Miami Vice and Bones, and movies such as Lethal Weapon (with Mel Gibson), The Wraith (with Charlie Sheen), and One Crazy Summer (with Demi Moore). During the 1990’s, the band went through several lineup changes, but in the early 2000’s, the original lineup of Johnnie, Derry, Dave and Gary was re-formed, along with the addition of Peter Nunn on keys, and is still intact today. Between 2001 and 2017, the band released 4 more studios albums. Then in 2019, Johnnie and Derry hooked up with Canadian producer Mike Krompass to begin work on their 9th album at his studio near Nashville, TN. Before long they were joined by Dave, Gary and Peter cutting bed tracks for the new album which would be called “Alive”, released in Feb. of 2024. The album saw the release of 3 singles. The first, “Tell Me What You Want”, was released in Oct., 2019 along with a groundbreaking new video. Response was immediate and positive from fans and radio alike. Then came “Find What You’re Looking For”, in June of 2020. The song was a hit on AOR Rock Radio in Canada, charting in the Billboard Top 30, the first time in 19 years for Honeymoon Suite. Then the 3rd single “Alive” was released in the summer of 2024 along with a video shot in their hometown of Niagara Falls. In the fall of 2024, the band began working on the 10th studio album with Mike Krompass at the helm as producer once again. With no sign of slowing down, Honeymoon Suite continue to create new music and tour year round thanks to a legion of loyal fans, and constant radio airplay to this day.
